RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Murilo Cerqueira struck a second-half winner as Palmeiras continued their march toward the Brazilian Serie A title on Wednesday with a 1-0 away victory over defending champions Atletico Mineiro.
Cerqueira broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when he met a Gustavo Scarpa cross with a first-time effort that left goalkeeper Everson Pires with no chance.
The hosts dominated possession and had six more shots on goal than their rivals, but they were unable to find a way past the Palmeiras defense.
The result leaves Palmeiras with 60 points from 28 outings, nine points ahead of second-placed Fluminense. Atletico Mineiro are seventh in the 20-team standings with 40 points.
