RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Five of the world's top 20 tennis players will take part in the Rio Open next month, tournament organizers said on Monday.

Among the participants will be Italian world No. 7 Matteo Berrettini and Norway's eighth-ranked Casper Ruud, along with former Rio Open champions Diego Schwartzman (ranked 13th) and Dominic Thiem (16th)

"This list is among the strongest and most diverse in our history," event director Luiz Carvalho said. "Every year we make a big effort to bring great names and this time we really exceeded expectations."

The ATP 500 clay-court tournament, which was canceled in 2021 because of COVID-19, will be played at the Jockey Club Brasileiro from February 12 to 20 in Rio de Janeiro's southern neighborhood of Gavea.

Previous Rio Open winners include Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzman.

The last edition in 2020 was won by Chile's Cristian Garin, who beat Gianluca Mager of Italy in the final.
