RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Reigning Brazilian Serie A champions Atletico Mineiro have completed the signing of Uruguay international defender Diego Godin on a free transfer, the Belo Horizonte club said on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old agreed to a one-year contract after parting ways with Italian Serie A side Cagliari by mutual consent.
"The Uruguayan center-back, who has played in three World Cups for his country, signed a contract that runs until December 31, 2022 with the possibility of an extension," Atletico said.
Capped 153 times for Uruguay, Godin made 40 appearances across all competitions for Cagliari following his September 2020 move from Inter Milan.
He will be a direct replacement for Paraguayan defender Junior Alonso, who this week left Atletico to join Russian Premier League outfit FC Krasnodar.
Godin is Atletico's third new signing so far this year following the arrivals of forwards Ademir Santos and Fabio Gomes.
