BUENOS AIRES, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Argentina on Friday reported 689 more deaths from the novel coronavirus disease in 24 hours, raising its pandemic death toll to 84,628.

According to the Health Ministry, in the same 24 hours, tests detected 26,934 new cases of COVID-19 infection, pushing the accumulated number of cases since the onset of the outbreak in March 2020 to 4,093,090.

The South American country has applied more than 15.73 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine since Dec. 29, when it launched its inoculation campaign.

Argentina is working "to vaccinate, vaccinate and vaccinate" against the disease to curb the spread of the virus, Health Minister Carla Vizzotti said Friday.

In the meantime, it is necessary "to strengthen care to reduce cases, hospitalizations and deaths," the official said at an event at the Argentine Proton Therapy Center in the capital Buenos Aires.

Vizzotti urged residents to "continue to strengthen care measures ... and minimize all risks regarding social gatherings and closed environments."

Argentina has extended some lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures until June 25.
