BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil on Wednesday recorded 1,437 new deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll to 97,256.

Tests also detected 57,152 new infections, bringing the total caseload to 2,859,073, said the health ministry.

The state of Sao Paulo, Brazil's most populous state, is the epicenter of the national outbreak, with 585,265 infections and 24,109 deaths.

BOGOTA -- The Colombian Ministry of Health on Wednesday raised the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 345,714, with 11,624 deaths.

According to the authorities, tests detected 10,735 new infections and 309 more patients died in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the ministry also announced that reopening pilot programs would soon begin in restaurants, gyms, and drive-in movie theaters across the country.

TRIPOLI -- The National Center for Disease Control of Libya on Thursday reported a record high of 251 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the national count to 4,475.

The center said in a statement that it had received a total of 1,618 suspected samples, 251 of which tested positive.

MAPUTO -- Mozambique will enter another 30 days of state of emergency from Friday, while the government seeks to relax some restrictive measures in three phases in the near future, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi announced on Wednesday night.

"We believe that our next steps are based on two fundamental lines of action: the first is the maintenance of COVID-19 prevention and control measures; the second is to guarantee that social and economic life follows its normal course," said Nyusi in a televised speech to the nation.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Thursday that it received reports of 37 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Wednesday, including 30 locally transmitted.

Of the locally-transmitted cases, 27 were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and three in Liaoning Province, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

NEW YORK -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 4.8 million on Wednesday, reaching 4,802,275 as of 3:34 p.m. local time (1934 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, the national death toll from the disease rose to 157,551, according to the CSSE.

BRUSSELS -- The COVID-19 pandemic dealt the hardest blow to the arts and entertainment sector as well as the retail, wholesale and food services in the European Union (EU), Eurostat statistics issued on Wednesday revealed.

According to the EU's statistical office, the sectors were hit both in terms of gross value added (GVA) and the number of hours worked by employees during the pandemic.
